Conference on “Islamic Law in Malaysia: An Introduction

As part of the "Wednesday Conferences" in our faculty, Mohd Al Adib Samuri, an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Deputy Director of the Institute of Islam Hadhari, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) gave a conference on “Islamic Law in Malaysia: An Introduction. Our Dean Ahmet Bostanci made the introductory speech. The Dean of Law Faculty Şafak Narbay, lecturers and students at our faculties were also present.

 

Dr. Samuri mentioned about that Malaysia has a majority Muslim population (60%) as well as a substantial non-Muslim community of various ethnicities. Accordingly, Islam has become a part of ethnic Malay identity, which constitutes the majority group of Muslims in Malaysia. He further stated that Malaysia has two legal systems: Civil law which is based on English Common law and Islamic law which is based on Sharia, Fiqh and customary law.

 

Dr. Samuri reiterated that Islamic law in Malaysia is only applicable to Muslims, not to non-Muslims. Each state is responsible for applying its specific Islamic law to the Muslims in their respective state. He gave many examples on The Islamic Law Written Statutes in Malay culture such as Polygamous Marriage, Intoxicating drinks, Apostasy, Conversion out of Islam and so on.
