Mosques or masjids, which were built to provide believers to worship together, have fulfilled many functions in addition to their basic functions throughout the history of Islam. Starting from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the mosque is beyond being a place for worship; it served as a place of administration and consultation, provided the development of science, knowledge and culture through educational activities, and became a source for the development of a mosque-centred civilization with the bazaars and settlements established around it.
Changes in the social structure in the historical process have also brought about changes in the religious and social functions of mosques and masjids and the way these functions are performed. Recently, we have witnessed that the rapid changes in science, technology and communication have profound effects on every aspect of social life. Some of them can be described as follow; the disconnection of knowledge from the source, the deconstruction of hierarchy in value transfer, the prominence of individuality against sociality and institutionalism. The experiences also bring about significant changes regarding the mosque, which is the centre of the social appearance of religion and its functions.
The eleventh of the "International Religious Officials Symposium", which has been held under ten different themes to date, will be organized under the coordination of Sakarya University Faculty of Theology and Yunus Emre Mosque Foundation (YECVA) with the contributions of Sakarya Governorship, Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality and Sakarya Provincial Mufti. The symposium is planned to be held in Sakarya between 7-9 October 2022. The symposium's theme is "Mosque and Its Functions in a Changing World". We invite all relevant academics and religious officials to contribute to the seminar. We aim to examine the functions of mosques and masjids according to their service areas in a rapidly changing world within the framework of needs and expectations.
